Onondaga Lake

The Explanation of Significant Differences (ESD) document for the Onondaga Lake Bottom Subsite of the Onondaga Lake Superfund Site is now available on DEC’s website atwww.dec.ny.gov/docs/remediation_hudson_pdf/734030rodesd.pdf. The ESD addresses both the remedial area along the southeastern shoreline and nitrate addition to the deep waters of the lake.

The ESD and additional project information is available on the DEC Region 7 Environmental Remediation webpage under Onondaga County.

Reed Webster Park

August 23rd, 2014

I am told the construction of the pavilion at Reed Webster Park will begin this week.  Due to a few unexpected issues with the timing and town emergencies this has caused a delay.  The new pavilion will be larger than the previous one.  With the increase use of the park the bathrooms there are now open.  One of the reasons why they have been kept close in the past was due to vandalism.  I ask that each of you keep an eye out and if you see any damages to contact the Parks Department at 487-3600.  As always if you see suspicious activity call 911.

Country Oaks

August 23rd, 2014

We are currently working with National Grid to get the mapping for the area’s that currently do not have street lights.  As soon as this information is available I will pass it along.  In addition, a portion of the development still does not have its final top coat applied for the effected roadways.  As we still have some homes to be built, this road work will not be completed until 2015.  As heavy trucks and equipment will still need to utilize the streets, we want to ensure the roads are at 100% prior to them being turned over to the town.

Additional Evidence of Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus Found In Onondaga County

August 23rd, 2014

Onondaga County Interim Health Commissioner, Michelle Mignano, announced today that the New York State Department of Health’s laboratory has reported finding additional evidence of Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEE) in three mosquito pools.  Two of the mosquito pools were collected in the Town of Cicero, one at the Rt. 298 site and one at the Taft Road site. The third was collected in the Town of Salina at the Ley Creek trap.   Ms. Mignano explained, “The Onondaga County Health Department conducts an extensive larviciding program, throughout the County, that is regularly evaluated based on positive virus findings.    In response to the finding of EEE in the Ley Creek trap, the larviciding efforts in the surrounding area will be intensified”.  The larvicide used contains bacteria that target and kill larvae in their breeding habitat before they can mature into adults.

The Health Department reminds residents that personal protection measures are important in preventing mosquito borne illness.  Mosquitoes are most active between dusk and dawn.  Personal protection is advised during outdoor activities.  Personal protection measures include wearing shoes, socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt when outside for a long period of time.  Applying a mosquito repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, or IR3535 is also recommended to prevent mosquito bites.  Repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products provide longer-lasting protection. Do not put the repellent directly onto children.  Put it on your hands and apply it to your child.  Do not put insect repellent on your face.  Wash skin and clothing after returning indoors.  Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for application.

The following are ways of helping to reduce mosquito breeding grounds:

  • Throw away outdoor containers, ceramic pots or containers that hold water.

  • Remove all tires from your property.
  • Drill holes in the bottoms of recycling containers that are kept outdoors.
  • Clean clogged rain gutters and make sure they continue to work properly.
  • Turn over wheelbarrows and wading pools when not in use.
  • Change water in bird baths at least every four days.
  • Clear vegetation and debris from the edges of ponds.
  • Clean chlorinated swimming pools, outdoor saunas, and hot tubs.
  • Drain water from pool covers.
  • Use landscaping to eliminate low spots where standing water accumulates.

For more information about personal protection measures contact the Onondaga County Health Department, Division of Environmental Health at 435-1649 or visit http://www.ongov.net/health/mosquitoborne.html

Camillus Police Grant

August 23rd, 2014

The New York State Attorney General has notified us that he has approved the Department’s application for funding from the Bullet Proof Vest (“inVEST”) Partnership. The Office of the Attorney General will reimburse our department for 50 percent of the purchase price of protective vests up to $9,796.50. This will allow us to purchase each current full and part time member of the police department a brand new bullet resistant vest. As this funding is now available, we have started the process of providing a onetime purchase of a bullet resistant vest for each of the hard working police officers who professionally serve our community each and every day In addition we were recently selected as a grant recipient for an additional prescription drug collection box.  We plan on putting this near the main entrance to the building (near the Town Clerks Office) as an additional location for our residents to drop off unwanted prescription medications.  this $1000 item is being provided at no cost to the Town of Camillus by CVS Pharmacy/Drug Stores.  Congratulations and continued success to Chief Winn and his team.

WAVES

August 23rd, 2014

There has been a lot of confusion in regards to WAVES ambulance service to residents of the 2nd Ward and hopefully the Public Hearing Scheduled for this Tuesday, August 26 at 7:00 will clear things up.  Anyone who is currently receiving WAVES services is already part of the district and is currently being charged a fee , this shows up on your tax bill and all these fees go direct to WAVES as part of their contract.  Those that are not in the district have received a letter from the town explaining the situation and notifying them of the Public Hearing on this Tuesday.  The town feels that WAVES provides a superior service and more importantly their response time is much quicker than GBAC.  That being said that is the purpose for the Public Hearing; o engage the public and get their feedback.  Your opinions will determine if we switch the service over to WAVES.  I can only speak for myself but if the residents who are currently serviced by GBAC are able to hear the facts and still want to stay with GBAC versus WAVES then I will support their decision.  It is really up to the residents.
