Camillus Senior Center

Tuesday, May 5th, 2020

A message from the Camillus Senior Center Director Tricia Bacon:

Please remember to wear a mask should you go out in public. If you don’t have access to a mask, please let me know and I will try to find one for you. Everyone should have one. A mask is not a guarantee that you won’t contract the virus but it can certainly lessen your chances.

If you are venturing out to go grocery shopping, please take advantage of the special senior hours many stores have:

· Aldi’s Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.
· Costco Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
· Dollar General First hour of operation
· Dollar Tree First hour of operation
· Rite Aid 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
· Target Wednesdays 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
· Tops Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:00 a.m. – 7:30 a.m.
· Walgreens Tuesdays 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
· Walmart Tuesdays 6:00 a.m. – 7:00 a.m.

Don’t forget that many stores have curbside pickup. For instance, you can order online at Walmart (or download the app to your smartphone), pay online and then pick up your groceries when you are notified that your order is complete. An attendant will load them into your trunk with zero contact with you. It’s very easy. I have personally done this several times and have been very pleased. Fruits, vegetables and bread are fresh and if you are provided with a substitution and don’t want it, they will delete it from your order.

I’ve seen several emails and text messages that say “Someone who came in contact with you tested positive for the coronavirus. Click on the link for more information” This is a SCAM! Do NOT click on the link. It’s sad that some people are trying to take advantage of us at our most vulnerable time. Let’s not let them succeed! Stay on top of your emails, messages and phone calls and do not give out any personal information. Don’t panic, think it through logically. Delete mail from anyone you don’t recognize and don’t click on any attached links.

If anyone is in need of non-medical home care, Sandra O’Connor from Elder Home Care has some availability. She can be reached at (315) 406-1519. Elder Home Care offers general companion care, medication reminders, meal preparation, grooming assistance, errands, light housekeeping as well as personal care services such as bathing, dressing, grooming, ambulation assistance, transferring and positioning, toileting, and feeding. If you know of someone who may benefit from some assistance, please pass on Sandra’s contact information.

This week’s activity suggestions:

· Place two kitchen chairs back to back about four feet apart. Stand between the chairs and march in place. Use the chairs for support if need.
· Put on some music and sing!! Sing ‘til your heart’s content. Your vocal chords need exercise too!
· Write a handwritten note to an old friend. Reminisce about old times.
· Explore YouTube.com. Search for travel destinations, tours, how to videos, exercise routines

Keep reaching out to friends, family, neighbors and ME! I’d love to know that you are OK and I’d love to hear how you are spending your time.

Parks and Recreation

Saturday, March 14th, 2020

I am very excited to announce that the Camillus Erie Canal Park will be renamed to honor Dave and Liz Beebe. Dr. Beebe and his wife Liz have been instrumental in the development of the park and the canal within the Town of Camillus. We cannot begin to even come close in recognizing their tireless efforts in this truly amazing community asset.

Parks & Recreation Director Eric Bacon is receiving the CNYRP David M. Guokas Memorial Award, the organization’s highest honor, in recognition of his
significant contributions to the advancement of the leisure field and active participation in community service.

We really have amazing people that make Camillus a better place to live, work and play.
