Local 315 – Brewery

June 19th, 2015

Looking for something new at the World of Empire Brewfest next weekend? You can’t get any newer than the beers from Local 315 Brewing Co. in Camillus. The brewery won’t officially open to visitors until July — but it’s brewing up some pilot batches that will be available at the beer fest on June 26 and 27 at the State Fairgrounds. Local 315 will offer samples of its IPA and Stout, according to Dan Matthews, a member of the family that is opening the brewery at 3202 Warners Road. The brewery has been under construction on the family’s Fawn Crossing Hop Farm for the past year. It’s not far from the intersection of Warners Road (Route 173) and Pottery Road. Brewer Josh Mersfelder has been working on the small pilot batches while awaiting the final installation of the larger brewing system the brewery will use. Local 315 will be one of about 75 breweries represented at the two-day brewfest, which has expanded since moving to the fairgrounds from Clinton Square in downtown Syracuse last year. Altogether, more than 150 beers will be available for sampling. The event also features a separately ticketed Empire Wine Fest. The fest is in and around Chevy Court, so there’s plenty of space to spread out with blankets, play Frisbee, and more. The fest also features seven bands, two brewer presentations, a homebrewing presentation, a “paint while you drink wine party,” a winemaking class, grape stomping, 2 cornhole tournaments, and yard games like Giant Jinga and Giant Yard Scrabble.

Fairmount Fair

June 9th, 2015

The old Dick’s Sporting Goods location at the Fairmount Fair plaza has been empty for years, but it will soon be filled. An Ashley Furniture HomeStore is headed to the site. No word from Ashley yet on an opening date, but coming soon signs are up at the old Dick’s spot. The space has been vacant for several years. Dick’s closed when the chain opened its new store at Destiny USA. The spot is right next to Fairmount Fair’s Ulta Beauty. The plaza is a busy one. Target, Michaels, Party City, Marshalls, PetSmart and Bed Bath & Beyond are all nearby. Developers are planning some big changes to a plaza just across the street from Target. Panda Express, Aspen Dental and Chipotle are moving in there.

Summer Town Board Schedule

Just a friendly reminder that for the months of June, July and August the Town Board only meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month. If a special meeting or issue is necessary we can call an emergency meeting to respond.

Peddlers & Solicitors

May 30th, 2015

Many of you have contacted me in regards to the persistence of unscrupulous individuals approaching your doors to sell energy or other products. At our last Town Board meeting I sponsored legislation that amends the language in Chapter 17 of Town laws. The changes put restrictions on whom specifically can obtain these licenses with increased costs and background checks. It also involves a mechanism for complaints and revocations of such licenses. You can simply just inform the individual(s) that you are not interested. If they persist please call 911.

Brush pick up

May 30th, 2015

There has been a change made to the brush pick up schedule. The schedule in the Insight Newsletter no longer applies as brush will now be picked up on a rotating schedule so you should never have brush in front of your house for more than 7 days. Essentially we are back to weekly pickup but it won’t always be the same scheduled day as in the past. The brush crew will be out daily going through zones the superintendent has set up. The Town has been divided into 5 zones so when the brush crew goes thru all 5 zones (usually in a week) they start over and begin again. Thus no matter what day you put out brush to the curb, it will be picked up within a week no matter what day you put it out. If a large pile is left it may be they have to send another type of vehicle to get the debris. So, don’t think it was forgotten; it will be done a few days later. This mostly refers to large leaf piles that a vacuum truck will address or large tree limbs that need a grapple or pay loader to pick up and haul away. We have our new Highway Superintendent, Paul Legnetto, to thank for this new schedule. Some have not been happy with the twice a month brush schedule especially in the Spring and Fall so this should be the answer. Please visit the Town of Camillus website and go to the highway dept. section to view the zones. Paul has a great grasp of technology and has interactive maps that show this. Fairly soon you will be able to see when street paving and basin work will be done each week. One last thing, grass clippings will not be picked up by the brush crew. If you bag your grass clippings you can take them to the compost area behind the highway garage.
