Firehouse Subs

September 13th, 2015

The opening of the Syracuse area’s first Firehouse Subs location has been pushed back slightly. The chain planned to have its first local store open around Labor Day. The opening is now planned for the first week of October, a spokeswoman for the company said in an email. Firehouse Subs will open in a former RadioShack location at 5308 W. Genesee St. in Camillus. The chain wants to open several more locations in the Syracuse area. Firehouse got its start in 1994. A pair of former firefighters, brothers Chris and Robin Sorensen, founded the company. The restaurants specialize in hot subs, but have cold options as well. The menu includes items like the Firehouse Meatball, Smokehouse Beef & Cheddar Brisket and New York Steamer. The chain is in serious growth mode. It has 895 locations now, with plans to grow to 2,000 by 2020.

Township 5

August 26th, 2015

The newest tenant at Township 5 in Camillus is a fitness studio. Elite Personal Fitness opened earlier this month. Owner John Mossotti has been a trainer at other area gyms for years. Elite uses a hybrid model of traditional personal training and group fitness classes. Members get a customized exercise plan, but work out in a group setting. The idea is to combine the benefits of individualized attention with the camaraderie built up in group classes, Mossotti said. Workouts take place at specific times throughout the day, but clients can come to any session they want, he added. Memberships start at $109 a month. Mossotti is running a special now to allow potential members to try the studio for three weeks at a cost of $49. Township 5 is a $58-million mixed-used project. It’ll have 500,000 square feet of space when finished including retail, offices and a 96-unit apartment complex. The development is located just off the Hinsdale Road exit of Route 5. Its main anchor is Costco, which opened in October. Since then, numerous other tenants have opened, including restaurants and retailers. A local restaurant, The Brasserie, opened in July. Another, Mitsuba Japanese Steakhouse, will open this fall. Another chain, Red Robin, will also open this fall. Work is underway on Township 5’s apartment complex, which will be managed by Morgan Management of Rochester. The development’s first office building is under construction too. It’ll be occupied by a medical tenant, Pediatric Associates. Movie Tavern, which offers in-theater dining and bar service, is also on its way to the project.

Boom Boom Mex Mex

August 24th, 2015

That boom you just heard? It’s the cheering from fans of Boom Boom Mex Mex, the seasonal Mexican eatery that left many Central New Yorkers heartbroken last spring when it didn’t reopen for the first time in 10 years. New owner Gino Laurenzo, working with former owners Tom and Lupe Bryan, is hoping to reopen the no frills, cafeteria-style restaurant at 3263 Howlett Hill Road in Camillus in a few weeks, or just after the New York State Fair. He’s hiring workers now and lining up permits. “Everything will be just about 100 percent the same,” said Laurenzo. “Same recipes, same menu, same operation. “Everybody loved it,’ he said, “so why mess with that?” Laurenzo bought the business and the property from the Bryans this summer. They are in Central New York now, working with him on the transition for about a month before returning to Mexico to continue their retirement. Starting in 2005, the Bryans had opened Boom Boom each April and closed each November. They had also operated at the State Fair and used to run a mobile stand called Boom Boom BBQ. Laurenzo plans to stay open each year until mid-December and probably reopen in mid-March — though that may change depending on the business and the weather. Once open, Boom Boom’s hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. Aside from learning Boom Boom’s secrets from the Bryans, Laurenzo is familiar with Mexican food himself. The native of Houston has operated Rio Grande Tex Mex Grille in New Hartford for 15 years. His mother, Ninfa Rodriguez Laurenzo, had opened Ninfa’s Mexican Restaurant in Houston in 1973. “I grew up with this food,” he said. Still, he said, the Boom Boom menu will be Boom Boom’s, not Rio Grande’s. “Rio Grande is more Tex-Mex, and Boom Boom is Mexican,” he said. “But of course there are similarities. Rio Grande had grilled chicken and Boom Boom has grilled chicken, you know, but the seasonings are different.” Laurenzo said he never had a chance to eat at Boom Boom when the Bryans ran it. A customer of his at Rio Grande who also patronized Boom Boom helped him make the link. News of Boom’s Boom’s return spread quickly on the Internet after Laurenzo posted the news on the restaurant’s Facebook page. The post had 369 likes and 381 shares within an hour. “And the phone’s been ringing off the hook,” he said. Some fans took to Twitter to spread the word.
