Onondaga Lake Dredging – Second Opinion

April 11th, 2013

In a follow up to last month’s resolution regarding the issues related to the lake dredging.  Here is a copy of the press release:

It was recently brought to the attention of the Camillus Town Board that residents of the Golden Meadows Subdivision last fall experienced recurring nose bleeds, burning throats and nasal passages, tearing eyes, headaches, nausea and other allergic reactions.  That coupled with the recurring obnoxious odors of last fall has convinced the Board that the Honeywell remediation project at the SCA on Wastebed 13 maybe endangering the health of those residents and it could possibly be due to the migration off site of VOC’s that have not been identified by the monitoring protocol in use.  It has also recently been brought to the Boards attention that there may be a better and more precise monitoring protocol available.  Therefore the Town has hired Minnich and Scotto of Freehold, New Jersey, a scientifically based consulting firm which focuses strictly on providing specialized air quality and meteorological analyses and services.  This organization will perform a comprehensive review of all relevant background data and evaluate the accuracy and the usefulness of the existing monitoring of VOC’s and also recommend a better and more appropriate monitoring protocol if there is such available.  The report of these experts will be available sufficiently in advance of the Spring startup of pumping operations to be implemented by DEC pursuant to its obligation to insure that there is no hazard to human health and its Court mandated oversight of Honeywell’s operations.

The residents of Golden Meadows have been subjected to obnoxious odors and a concern that they are exposed to health hazardous levels of VOC’s.  Now is the time to eliminate all of that consternation by the obvious need for a second opinion of qualified experts which the Camillus Town Board has commissioned by engaging Minnoch and Scotto.

Survey

March 26th, 2013

Survey – SUNY ESF is working with the Town of Camillus & Geddes, regional planning experts, and the community to develop a conceptual plan for additional recreational opportunities in our community that could connect to the Loop the Lake Trail and the Erie Canal Trail.  The plan will encompass up to 10% of the 660 acres of former industrial property off of Airport and Armstrong Roads.  A community survey is being mailed out with a pre-paid envelope and I encourage all to participate in helping to shape the future of our region.
