Many of you have asked how do I get involved in the community in a meaningful, knowledgeable way? What and who do I need to know about how our local governments operate?

F.O.C.U.S. AND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY have an answer for you:

Apply for admission to the 2013 Citizens Academy class to learn about the structure and operations of local governments and meet with elected and appointed government officials.

F.O.C.U.S. Greater Syracuse and University College of Syracuse University are once again accepting applications for its 2013 Citizens Academy Class! In our ninth year with nearly 300 graduates, Citizens Academy teaches participants about how our local government works, how they can join with government leaders to effect change and how to help create the future for our community.

Topics that will be covered include: Social Equity/Social Justice; Economic Vitality; Environmental Stewardship; Schools, Scholars and Resources; Public Safety; Planning, Land Use and Transportation; Local Government Budget and Finance; and the Organization of Local Government.

The 2013 session will run for 8 consecutive Wednesday evenings from Sept. 11 through Oct. 30, 2013. The class is held from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. with a light supper provided at various county- and city-owned facilities throughout the community. Each night, we will have government officials and representatives to discuss challenges and opportunities their departments are facing and to answer participants’ questions.

Participation is FREE but there are a limited number of spots available. Participants are expected to attend all sessions.

The owners of 4002 W. Genesee Street recently appeared before the Planning Board to modify the structure.  This is the former location of Fresno’s and most recently IHOP.  There was no information from the applicant on the new plans other than it would be a casual style restuarant.  It is the same group that owns/operates the Tullys chain in Syracuse.

Public Hearings:

1. Consider amending the Camillus Municipal Code, Chapter 34-Fences, §34.7-Exceptions to allow an 8’ high fence extending easterly from the southwest corner of the property located at 106 Sawyer Street, TM #:  046.-02-04.1, to a point 35’ from Sawyer Street.
2. Consider changing the zoning classification of the property located at 5340 West Genesee Street, TM #: 035.-05-52.2, from MUN to C5. 

New Business:

1. 10. Set the date, time, and place at July 23, 2013 at 7:00 PM to hold a public hearing at the Camillus Municipal Building to repeal and replace Chapter 33, Unsafe Buildings, the purpose of which is to grant expanded authority to the Camillus Town Board to secure and maintain abandoned properties and place the cost of such matters on the properties owners tax bill.

1. Due to the slow down of town business, Town Board meetings are only held once a month.  They occur on the 4^th Thursday of July & August.  However, sometimes emergency situations do come up so please do not hesitate to contact me if we need to get an item added to the agenda.

Bryne Dairy recently closed their West Genesee Street location and has plans to expand their new location at the corner of Milton Avenue and Onondaga Road (Rte. 173).  The new store will approximately double in size and a new parking lot with an entrance from Sawyer Street will be constructed.

The Town Board recently amending the Camillus Municipal Code, Chapter 60-Traffic and Vehicles, §60.51(B) Truck Exclusions-Five Ton, for the purpose of allowing a temporarily lift of the exclusion of five ton truck vehicle traffic on Hinsdale Road between Milton Avenue and West Genesee Street.  The exclusion is only allowed from May 1, 2013 through November 27, 2013 due to construction in the area.  This temporary lift of the exclusion is only for the period during which repaving will be taking place on Route 5.
