The Camiluss Canal Society continues to seek funding and recently was given a CNY Arts grant of $513 for the Camillus Erie Canal Park. The grant will be used toward the cost of the park’s annual Towpath Day event. The annual celebration will be held Saturday August 12th, and offers family entertainment, crafts, food, boat rides on the Erie Canal and exhibits.
I attended the Camillus Canal Society’s Annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner last evening. As always I marvel at the passion and commitment the 166 Active Volunteers dedicate to one of our towns’ most prized assets. Over the course of 2016 the volunteers logged an amazing 23,145 hours (those that signed in). If you do the math this is the equivalent of 11 1/2 full-time employees. A conservative estimate would put this cost at $600,000 to the town. I would also like to congratulate 2nd Ward resident and one of the original 1972 volunteers, Paul Bertan, with being selected as one of two Volunteers of the Year. My sincerest congratulations and thanks to Paul, Dr. David and Liz Beebe, all award recipients and all the volunteers on continuing to make Camillus a great place to live, work, play, create and visit.

Sketch Plan
At a recent meeting, the Camillus Planning Board approved Walmart’s request to build a canopy with a dedicated grocery pickup spot on the west side of its store at 5399 W. Genesee St. The changes will accommodate customers who order their groceries online and then come to the store at a designated time to pick them up. The company did not say when the service will begin in Camillus. Using either the Walmart app or going to the company’s website at Walmart.com/grocery, customers choose from 30,000 items, pay for the order and set a time to pick it up. The minimum order is $30. Trained personal shoppers go through the aisles choosing produce, meat and other groceries to fill the order. The items are kept cool or frozen until the customer arrives. The customer arrives at the store, parks in a designated spot and calls a special phone number. Store associates then come out and load the order into the customer’s car. Same-day pickup is available. Orders placed by 1 a.m. will be available for pickup from 8 a.m. and orders placed by 10 a.m. will be available from 4 p.m. Customers can also schedule grocery pickups up to three weeks in advance.
I am happy to report that the Town of Camillus will be receiving grant funding in the amount of $50,000 from Onondaga County – Community Development Grant fund. The funding will go to enhance and improve the Bicentennial Park Playground, which is located in front of the Town Hall on W. Genesee Street. My sincere thanks to Supervisor Coogan and the Town Board for their assistance on this grant.
