Senior Center Updates

June 9th, 2020

From the Senior Center Director, Tricia Bacon:

As many of you have already heard, I have cancelled all of our day trips for 2020 as well as the Canyon Country trip scheduled for September. It was a difficult decision to make but one that had to be made to keep our seniors safe and healthy. I have mailed back checks to everyone who was registered for the day trips. If you haven’t received yours, they should arrive any day now. Payments by credit card will be reimbursed with a refund check issued by the town that may take a few weeks. I know everyone is disappointed but, since they were so popular, I will try to offer the same trips next year. Stay tuned! The Canyon Country trip has been rescheduled for September 2021 so if you were unable to join us this year but would like to go next year, please let me know and I will give you all the details.

To anyone who signed up for the AARP Smart Driver program, the classes have been cancelled indefinitely. Checks will be mailed back in the coming weeks. We will try to reschedule when the center re-opens. We apologize for the inconvenience.

There is a great virtual workshop (via Zoom) being offered by Upstate, Oasis and the Onondaga County Office of Aging. The program is called “Living Healthy With A Chronic Condition” and it is FREE to participate. It is a 6-week series that will run on either Wednesday mornings (9:00 – 11:30 am) beginning June 24 or Thursday mornings (10:00 – 12:30) beginning July 30. The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program will help you gain control over your health and improve your quality of life. Especially if you have a chronic condition such as: diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, chronic pain, cancer, anxiety/depression, asthma/COPD or another health condition. Each participant will receive a free book, “Living a Healthy Life with chronic conditions” as well as the CD, “Relaxation for the mind and Body”. To register, call Lisa at (315) 447-3434. Once you are registered, you will receive the materials in the mail and assistance on using Zoom.

For those of you running out of books to read, good news! In addition to the books, DVDs, and puzzles available at the Senior Center, The Maxwell Library has just announced that they are opening for curbside pickup beginning June 15th. The library will be closed for browsing but you can go to www.onlib.org to search for and place reserves on library materials. For those without internet access, you may call the library at (315) 672-3661 for assistance.

Camillus Senior Center

May 5th, 2020

A message from the Camillus Senior Center Director Tricia Bacon:

Please remember to wear a mask should you go out in public. If you don’t have access to a mask, please let me know and I will try to find one for you. Everyone should have one. A mask is not a guarantee that you won’t contract the virus but it can certainly lessen your chances.

If you are venturing out to go grocery shopping, please take advantage of the special senior hours many stores have:

· Aldi’s Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.
· Costco Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
· Dollar General First hour of operation
· Dollar Tree First hour of operation
· Rite Aid 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
· Target Wednesdays 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
· Tops Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:00 a.m. – 7:30 a.m.
· Walgreens Tuesdays 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
· Walmart Tuesdays 6:00 a.m. – 7:00 a.m.

Don’t forget that many stores have curbside pickup. For instance, you can order online at Walmart (or download the app to your smartphone), pay online and then pick up your groceries when you are notified that your order is complete. An attendant will load them into your trunk with zero contact with you. It’s very easy. I have personally done this several times and have been very pleased. Fruits, vegetables and bread are fresh and if you are provided with a substitution and don’t want it, they will delete it from your order.

I’ve seen several emails and text messages that say “Someone who came in contact with you tested positive for the coronavirus. Click on the link for more information” This is a SCAM! Do NOT click on the link. It’s sad that some people are trying to take advantage of us at our most vulnerable time. Let’s not let them succeed! Stay on top of your emails, messages and phone calls and do not give out any personal information. Don’t panic, think it through logically. Delete mail from anyone you don’t recognize and don’t click on any attached links.

If anyone is in need of non-medical home care, Sandra O’Connor from Elder Home Care has some availability. She can be reached at (315) 406-1519. Elder Home Care offers general companion care, medication reminders, meal preparation, grooming assistance, errands, light housekeeping as well as personal care services such as bathing, dressing, grooming, ambulation assistance, transferring and positioning, toileting, and feeding. If you know of someone who may benefit from some assistance, please pass on Sandra’s contact information.

This week’s activity suggestions:

· Place two kitchen chairs back to back about four feet apart. Stand between the chairs and march in place. Use the chairs for support if need.
· Put on some music and sing!! Sing ‘til your heart’s content. Your vocal chords need exercise too!
· Write a handwritten note to an old friend. Reminisce about old times.
· Explore YouTube.com. Search for travel destinations, tours, how to videos, exercise routines

Keep reaching out to friends, family, neighbors and ME! I’d love to know that you are OK and I’d love to hear how you are spending your time.

Parks and Recreation

March 14th, 2020

I am very excited to announce that the Camillus Erie Canal Park will be renamed to honor Dave and Liz Beebe. Dr. Beebe and his wife Liz have been instrumental in the development of the park and the canal within the Town of Camillus. We cannot begin to even come close in recognizing their tireless efforts in this truly amazing community asset.

Parks & Recreation Director Eric Bacon is receiving the CNYRP David M. Guokas Memorial Award, the organization’s highest honor, in recognition of his
significant contributions to the advancement of the leisure field and active participation in community service.

We really have amazing people that make Camillus a better place to live, work and play.
