The American Red Cross has a new program called Sound the Alarm. Red Cross volunteers go to homes in the community, regardless of income or location, and test the current smoke alarms and they will replace them with new ones if needed. All homes are eligible for up to 3 new smoke alarms that are guaranteed to last for 10 years. In addition to installing the smoke alarms, volunteers also provide the residents with home fire safety education. So far, the program has been successful in saving 520 lives!
