Abandon Property – 105 Thomas Avenue

May 16th, 2012

During our last town board meeting I put forward the following resolution:  Councilor LaFlair moved to authorize Code Enforcement to proceed with property clean up at 105 Thomas Avenue, TM#:  013.-05-10.0, in accordance with Chapter 74-Brush, Grass, Rubbish, and Weeds.  Councilor Salanger seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved.

Unfortunately the process for cleaning up abandon properties is a lenghty one but it can be easier if we stay on top of them.  At the same time that this was passed I contacted codes to put a call to the bank holding the lien.  They have agreed to monitor the property and ensure the grass is kept up and the trailer out front that is filled with trash is empty.  Since aesthetics are subjective the only recourse is through Health and Safety violations.  This can only be done if the grass grows above 10″ in height.  Please contact our codes department at 487-8930 if this is an issue at vacant properties.

I am happy to announce that the proposed Fine Arts Center has received its necessary approvals from the Zoning Board and will be openning soon.  The business will be located at the former St. Joseph’s Church on Newport Road and will offer lessons in the music and fine arts.  This is a great re-use for an otherwise derelict building and I wish the owners much success.

Lead Abatement/Home Improvement Grants

May 16th, 2012

ONONDAGA COUNTY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT – HOME IMPROVEMENT GRANTS AVAILABLE

Do you live in a home built before 1978?  Are you interested in increasing the value of your home while making it a safer environment for your children, grandchildren, or other visitors under the age of 6?  If you answered “yes” to these questions, and have a current income below 80% of the county median, you may be eligible for a grant to reduce lead-based paint hazards in your home.   (A family of 4 with an annual income below $53,300 meets the guidelines.)

Onondaga County Community Development’s Lead Hazard Reduction Program helps homeowners and landlords by removing lead paint hazards in their properties.  Depending on findings of the Risk Assessment performed at your home, repair work funded by the grant can range from small paint restorations to whole house renovations involving window and door replacement, porch work, siding, trim work, flooring and painting.  The program covers 100% of the lead hazard reduction costs.

Additionally, for a 25% contribution, homeowners may opt to have general repair work, (roofing, plumbing, electric, etc.), completed at their property.  For more details contact:
