Onondaga Lake Trail – West Shore

April 30th, 2014

The newest stretch of the Onondaga Lake trail will be opened to the public Sunday May 18 with a 5-mile walk/run and community expo, Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney announced Tuesday. The Onondaga Lake West Shore Trail Extension grand opening starts with an official ribbon cutting at 10:45 a.m. The walk/run is named for the Lake View Point hotel, which opened in 1872. It begins at 11 a.m.

The event will be held on the west side of Onondaga Lake in the Orange parking lot of the New York State Fairgrounds, near the Onondaga Lake Visitor Center, off of Route 690. The expo will have live music, food trucks and activities from parks and community organizations, including the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, Beaver Lake Nature Center, Syracuse Sail & Power Squadron, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Onondaga Audubon, Syracuse Chargers, the Nine Mile Conservation Council and the Izaak Walton League.

There will be T-shirts for the first 100 visitors and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation will give away 200 tree seedlings from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free. There is no advance registration for the run. The run is not competitive.

The latest trail extension goes 2.3 miles from the east side of Onondaga Lake to the Honeywell Visitor’s Center on the west side. It cost $4.5 million to build. Onondaga County officials have presented some options to the community for the next stretch of trail, which will go from the state fairgrounds to the end of the Onondaga Creekwalk behind Destiny USA. For more information, visit the Onondaga County Parks website or call 453-6712.

Consolidated Local Street & Highways

April 26th, 2014

The Consolidated Street and Highway Improvement Program is an important form of state aid to municipalities, helping to maintain local roads and bridges.  Through the efforts assisted by Senator John DeFrancisco, due to the harsh winter Camillus will be receiving an additional $20.992.62 in local aid this year.

Camillus Canal Society

April 26th, 2014

I recently attended the Erie Canal Park’s Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.  The volunteers do a wonderful job each and every year.  It is worth noting that the volunteers logged 22,884 hours last year, which is equivalent to 11 1/2 full time employees and valued at approximately $575,000, which is a tremendous value to the Town and very much appreciated.

Reed Webster Park

April 26th, 2014

I recently spoke with Parks Director Eric Bacon in regards to the Pavilion replacement at Reed Webster Park.  He is currently working with Building and Grounds Supervisor Tom Hart on finalizing the budget.  They are looking at replacing the Pavilion as its former size or enlarging it.  His goal is to have the structure back in place by mid-July.

Brush Pick up

April 26th, 2014

Spring is finally here, other than the lingering cold and that means clean ups.  As a service the town picks up brush for the residents.  Please remember to keep all material on your property and not in the road or along on the roads’ right of way.  This creates a safety hazard and also increases your costs as the highway department is forced to make a special trip to pick up these unsafe hazards. The schedule for the next few months is as follows:

May 4th & 18th

June 1st, 15th & 29th

July 14th & 28th,
