Here is information on area clean-ups in coordination with Earth Day:

o The Boy scouts are going to be working in Shove park
o West area home owners will be led by Lee Goetches 672-8437
o At the canal, the CTANY encourages people along the canal to participate in “CLEAN SWEEP” which will be over the weekend of April 18 and 19.
o Erie Canal Park has cleanups on Saturdays, April 25, May 2, 9:30 to noon. Lunch at noon.
o The Town Shop DOES plan to participate again this year for our 43rd in a row. We do Newport Road past fire house and both ramps of route 5 bypass (most visitors’ first impression) plus Ryan Way. New York has new recycling regulations as of March 1. Stores are now required to accept plastic film marked with the recycling triangle “2” and “4” in addition to grocery bags. Included are newspaper bags, dry cleaning bags, bread bags, produce bags and plastic wrapping from around paper products. Hard plastic seals (like the “zippers” ) must be cut off. Soil, mulch or compost bags are not acceptable unless the plastic has been cleaned and dried. We’ve been collecting this plastic for several weeks, and there is lots. Washing plastic bags is no fun; avoid using them when possible. That is a goal of the new rules, of course.

NEW BUSINESS

1. Set the date, time and place as April 28, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Camillus Municipal Building to hold a public hearing to consider amending the Camillus Municipal Code, Chapter 34-Fences, §34.7-Exceptions, the purpose of which is to allow a six foot fence in the northeast corner of property at 107 Cutler Drive.

2. Set the date, time and place as May 12, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Camillus Municipal Building to hold a public hearing to consider amending the Camillus Municipal Code, Chapter 30, Zoning, §1504 by adding a new subdivision C which shall read as follows: Tax map parcel 017.-04-48.2 is hereby exempt from the off premises prohibition contained in Section 802(K) of this Chapter to allow owners and occupants of parcels 017.-04-02.1 and 017.-04-48.3 to advertise on a sign to be erected at the Hinsdale Road driveway of parcel 017.-04-48.2, which sign shall otherwise comply with the provisions of Chapter 30, unless varied by the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Some big changes are coming to a retail plaza on West Genesee Street in the Fairmount section of Camillus. Developers plan to overhaul an area currently home to Joy Carpet, Idol Nails and a strip center. New tenants lined up for the project include Aspen Dental, the area’s second Panda Express location and one of Upstate New York’s first Qdoba Mexican Grill locations. The Joy Carpet and nail salon buildings and a portion of the strip plaza would be torn down, according to minutes. The project would result in three new buildings on the site, which is just across from the Fairmount Target. There’s space for tenants beyond the three announced so far. Panda Express is a rapidly growing fast-casual Chinese chain. The company recently opened its first stand-alone location in New York in Cicero. Qdoba has long been on the radar of area Tex-Mex enthusiasts. The fast-casual chain’s menu includes burritos, tacos, Mexican gumbo, quesadillas and more. It’s similar to Chipotle, which has three locations in the Syracuse area already. The Camillus Qdoba would be one of the chain’s first locations in the state outside the New York City area. No word from developers on when work on the Camillus project will start. Several of the businesses currently in the area have either moved already or have plans to:
• Joy Carpet will eventually close its store at the site, but is looking for another Fairmount location, said Joe Commisso, who co-owns the business with his wife Patty. Joy opened a second store at the Glenn Crossing plaza in Liverpool in January.
• James Hallinan, an optician with a practice in the strip center, is transferring his business to Druger Eye Care. Bryant Optical is taking Hallinan’s contact lens patients.
• Hallinan’s Wine & Liquors, a liquor store in the strip plaza run by another member of Hallinan’s family, has already moved. It’s now located at a nearby plaza behind the Five Star Urgent Care location in Camillus.
• CoolWaters Pool and Spa closed its location at the strip plaza. The business has additional locations in Solvay and Liverpool and is planning a new store in Fairmount as well.
• Dart Computer moved from the center to a nearby location next to Citizens Bank.
• Idol Nails is moving to a new location in Camillus at 4100 W. Genesee St.

Construction has resumed on a 119-unit senior citizen apartment project off Milton Avenue. Clover Construction, the construction arm of Williamsville-based Clover Group, began site work on a hill on the south side of Milton Avenue, between Knowell and Hinsdale roads, last year but stopped when winter came. With the snow finally melting, the company recently resumed work on the site, starting with construction of a retaining wall, said Gary Clunie, Clover Construction’s chief operating officer. Clunie said construction of the one- and two-bedroom apartments will take about a year. They should be ready for occupancy in the spring of 2016, he said. The market-rate apartments, to be named Camillus Pointe Senior Apartments, will be rented to people 55 years old and older. Monthly rents will be from $970 for one-bedroom units and from $1,125 for two-bedroom units, according to Clover’s website. Clover specializes in building apartments for senior citizens. It built and operates two other senior apartment projects in the Syracuse area — Morgan Square near the corner of Route 31 and Morgan Road in Clay, and Buckley Square at 6715 Buckley Rd. in Salina.

The latest plans by Morgan Management have the proposed Starbucks removed and replaced with Aspen Dental. I am unsure at this time what that means for the Aspen location near Wal-Mart. I will follow up with information as soon as its available.

Camillus Parks and Recreation is offering an American Red Cross Lifeguard training/water front module and certifications course at the West Genesee High School Pool. Applicants must be at least 15 years old prior to 3/30/15.
