Workers Compensation Savings

May 4th, 2017

The Town received a refund from our Workers Compensation Carrier, for the year ended 06/30/16 in the amount of $13,584. Our Comptrollers office requested an on-site audit. Reporting our wage information was particularly challenging this year as we had changes in our payroll systems over the audit period. A continued great job by our Comptroller’s Office and a special thanks to Carol O’Neil for a wonderful job of working directly with the auditor to make sure that the classifications and wages were correct.

We are hopeful that we will get a similar refund for the period ending 2017 and the renewal will be lower than this year’s budget for next year!

Town Clerk

April 29th, 2017

Congratulations to Camillus Town Clerk Martha Dickson-McMahon, who was recently awarded the NYS Town Clerks Association certification as a Registered Municipal Clerk. This prestigious award recognizes her professional competency in fulfilling the responsibilities of her office. Certification is granted only after an applicant has demonstrated that they have met the stringent education and experience requirements established by NYSTCA. Great job Martha!!

The Town of Camillus recently secured additional funding through the CHIPS, Local PAVE-NY Program, and the Extreme Winter Recovery Apportionment in the total amount of $264,753.94 through the efforts of our State Senator John DeFrancisco.

Dave Vermilya

April 29th, 2017

As many of you know, the Camillus Community lost one of its own with the recent passing of Dave Vermilya. David and his wife Cheryl have run the Camillus Youth Center, known as the Town Shop since 1971. To put into words the impact that Dave had on our community and our youth would be impossible. When I heard of Dave’s unexpected passing I immediately thought of a quote from the movie It’s a Wonderful Life, “Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole.” There will be a remembrance and celebration of Dave on Saturday May 6 from 3:00 – 7:00 at Shove Park.

Town Savings

April 29th, 2017

At our most recent Town Board meeting we had an item which I wanted to mention as it will result in additional revenues for the town. By working with a consultant we were able to recapture $159,043 from Charter Communications as part of past franchise fees for cable rights.

Onondaga Lake Restoration Plan

April 29th, 2017

After giving the public just three days notice to comment on an Onondaga Lake restoration plan that took 10 years to compile, the state has scheduled three more public sessions.

You might have to take time off work to get to them, though: None are in the evening.

The 73-page plan was released Monday by the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. They had spent a decade studying the effects of industrial pollution of the lake, and proposed 20 projects to help compensate the public for those effects. When the report was released, the only public meeting was scheduled for Thursday. After an article and an editorial by Syracuse.com about the short notice, state officials announced Wednesday there would be three more sessions for the public to learn about, and comment on, the plan.

Dozens of people attended the session Thursday at the Honeywell Visitors Center, on the west shore of the lake. State and federal officials had posters and brochures outlining the projects, which include setting aside more than 1,400 acres of land for recreation, building a fishing pier, and extending hiking and biking trails.

Here is the tentative schedule for the additional sessions:

10 a.m. to noon Thursday, May 11, during the regular meeting of the Onondaga Lake Watershed Partnership. It will be held in Room 203 of the Center of Excellence Building, 727 E. Washington St., Syracuse.
4:15 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 18, during the regular meeting of the Community Participation Working Group. The group meets at the Honeywell Visitors Center.
7:30 to 8:45 a.m. Friday, May 19, during the regular meeting of FOCUS Greater Syracuse. It will be in the atrium of City Hall Commons, 201 E. Washington St., Syracuse.
Written comments on the plan can be submitted until June 2. You can access the report here:Report
