A new retail store selling beer on tap as well as individual bottles of beer and six packs is now open in Township 5 in Camillus.
Branching Out Bottle Shop, in the retail center on Route 5 at Hinsdale Road, offers eight beers on tap to fill growlers, and carries more than 500 varieties of beer. The store also carries cider, seltzer and hard soda, said Carissa Monahan, who owns and runs the shop with her husband, Joel. The 2,000-square-foot shop is next to the wine store Vine & Barrel. Carissa Monahan, a certified public accountant with a master’s in business administration, said she’s always wanted to run a small business. The store was originally going to be called Which Craft Bottle Shop, but another shop already was using the name. The shop will have beer tastings every other Friday, although the first tasting – featuring Middle Ages Brewery – will be on Thursday, Aug. 17.

F.O.C.U.S. Greater Syracuse and University College at Syracuse University are now accepting applications for the 2017 Citizens Academy Class. In its 13th year with over 400 graduates, Citizens Academy teaches participants:

How our local government works
How they can join with government leaders to effect change
How to help create the future for our community

Topics that will be covered include: Community Vitality; Economic Vitality; Environmental Stewardship; Schools, Scholars and Resources; Public Safety; Planning, Land Use and Transportation; Local Government Budget and Finance; and the Organization of Local Government.

The 2017 session will run for eight consecutive Wednesday evenings from Sept. 6 through Nov. 1, 2017 (no class on Sep. 20). The class is held from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. with a supper provided at various county- and city-operated facilities throughout the community. Each night, there will be government officials and representatives to discuss challenges and opportunities their departments are facing and to answer participants’ questions.

Participation is FREE and participants are expected to attend all sessions. There are a limited number of spots available. The deadline for applications is Friday, July 31, 2017.

District 2 & 16 – new location is the Holy Cross Church at 3690 Armstrong Road in Camillus
District 6 will still be voting at the Camillus Fire Station on Newport Road.
