As a result of the numerous complaints some town board members had received throughout the past few years regarding the deer population, the Town of Camillus agreed to work with Wildlife Services and some private property owners to reduce the number of white-tail deer. Properties belonging to the town were surveyed and evaluated for safety of firearms use. During the months of January, February and March, 34 white-tailed deer were removed from Camillus. These deer were processed and as a result, 1,020 pounds of venison were delivered to the food bank as a donation. We did face some challenges during the culling process. One challenge was interference with baiting activities by outside groups. Another challenge was that we had very warm weather on culling nights and the deer did not need to visit baiting stations to eat. The USDA asks that we remind residents that this is a multi-year program. We are already looking for some private properties to expand our culling next year. Those residents whose properties were part of the tick drag will be notified of the results as soon as they are in.
